Zagarthôr (A. "Sword-lord") was the asapthubeth (councilor) of Nîlûlôni during the War of the Last Alliance.

History[]

He was a descendant of Bêlzagar, a general during the Korlean War of S.A. 3319.

In S.A. 3419, Zagarthôr led the fleet dispatched by the Bellakarian League that sailed to the aid of Gondor. He made harbor in Lebennin, and came to Pelargir, where he battled the Seventh of the Nazgûl with King Anárion. The Bellakarian army defeated many of the Haruzan and Ioriags, and in S.A. 3430 came to the defense of the Anduin after King Elendil ended the siege of Gondor.

In S.A. 3434, Zagarthôr and the others rode south to besiege Mordor. He asked to be placed in the army of Elendil, and told the High King that not all lands in the south had fallen to the Shadow, though also noted that Bellakar would not recognize the line of Elendil as their rulers, even while maintaining great respect for them. Elendil addressed him as Macilion of Silmalondë in the hearing of their allies, signifying that the Bellakarians were to be treated as the Faithful and not descendants of the King's Men. He was also given a ring as a gift by the High King in order to hold as an heirloom so that his line would be able to rally followers against Black Númenóreans.

Zagarthôr was killed on the slopes of Orodruin in S.A. 3441 beside Elendil. His descendant was Zimrêbal Ironhand, who in T.A. 340 would become the first king of Bellakar.
