A species of giant catfish, the wels was an ugly brute. They were usually up to 4-5' long, but sometimes reached 10'. A larger wels weighed nearly 700 lbs. It had a rounded body with a flattened head and a wide, horizontal mouth, around which were two long sensory barbels and four short ones. Wels were known to swallow prey whole and would sometimes bash boats to see what fell out.
