The War of the Dwarves and Orcs also known as the Goblin-Wars, was a conflict fought from TA 2793-2799 between the Orcs of the Misty Mountains and the Dwarves, especially Durin's Folk.
The war was caused by the murder and mutilation of Thror in 2790 by Orcs of Moria, and specifically by their leader Azog. After mustering their forces, in 2793 the Dwarves began sacking every Orc-hold they could find in the Misty Mountains, all the while searching for Azog. In 2799, all the surviving Orcs gathered in Moria, and the Dwarves met them in the Battle of Azanulbizar.
Most of the Orcs were killed in this war, and this made the Misty Mountains safter for a century and a half, but many Dwarves were also slain. A large number of surviving Orcs fled across Rohan and settled in the Ered Nimrais, but they were killed by 2864.
It was technically the Sixth War of the Dwarves of the Orcs, but it was one of the greatest conflicts, and most recent conflict to Dwarves by the War of the Ring, and thus the number was often omitted.
