The War of the Dwarves and Dragons (Kh."Zirakthârul Khazâd ai Dûmûmbîzal"; The Great Wrath of the Dwarves against the Worms) or the Dragon-War, also known as the Scorching of the North, was a protracted and devastating series of conflicts fought between the Dwarves of the Seven Houses and the Dragons of the North during the late Third Age. This war was driven by the greed of dragons for the wealth amassed by the Dwarves, particularly their vast hoards of gold and mithril. The war saw the Dwarves at the height of their power, yet despite their unmatched skill in warfare and fortification, the overwhelming might and fire of the Dragons proved too great a foe. The war resulted in the near-destruction of several Dwarven strongholds and the rise of Dragon-infested regions in the northern mountains of Middle-earth, culminating in the Sack of Erebor (T.A. 2770) by Smaug, marking the final blow to Dwarven dominion in the North.
The War of the Dwarves and Dragons took place in two areas of Middle Earth:
- Spine of Arda (T.A.1650-2770)
- Ered Mithrin (T.A. 2570-2589)
