The Timeless Void, also called the Outer Dark, the Everlasting Dark or the Ancient Darkness (Q."Avacúma", "Oiacúma", "Cúma"), or rarely as Space, was the dark realm beyond the physical realm of Arda and the spiritual one of the Timeless Halls. It was a region mostly of nonexistence and very basic matter outside of time and vacant for creation, in which the Essence was absent.

The Void existed before , or rather which was created within it by Eru.The Void was separated from Ea by the Walls of Night, the only known way in or out of the Void was the Door of Night.

Morgoth had long wandered the Void before he had entered Arda and was cast there by the Valar after the War of Wrath. Ungoliant had been a dweller of the Outer Dark he had met and befriended her as well as possibly other Demons of the Void. His Heir, Sauron, was also banished to the Void following his downfall in the War of the Ring. It is said in some legends, however, that Morgoth will eventually be freed from the Void and with Sauron at his side will command all of evil's servants for the Last Battle to end all Battles.

The empty space outside of Arda was sometimes known as the "Inner Void" (Q."Micúma" or "Lusta") , but the Wise knew that this part of Eä was different from the Ancient Darkness outside the Timeless Halls.
