MERP Lands attached to an alternative continental map based on Tolkiens sketches but in larger proportions

The Uttermost South (Q."Hyareccaira", Ad."Êphalankharâdê") of Middle-earth comprised all lands south of the Far Southern Mountains and the Girdle of Arda (equator). This region consisted primarily of tribal territories and former Black Númenórean colonies. The subcontinent was also designated as the Far Sunlands (Ad."Êphalûrêzâin") or Dark Harad (Q."Hyarmenúla", "Southern Darkness") and encompassed most of the Dark Forests of the South. Although, when Morgoth's ashes and clouds darkened Menel, this effect did not extend to the far South.

The southernmost region of Middle-earth, designated in various tongues as "Êphalûrezâin", "Êphalankhâradê", or "Îrdori", formed a distinct subcontinental zone. The "Uttmost South" in Westron constituted the far southern territories of Harad rather than a separate continent. The region remained largely unmapped and undocumented in northern lore.

The Lands[]

Êphalûrezâin contained extensive lowland jungles, savannahs termed Andesalcë in Quenya, subtropical coastal areas, scattered highlands, and archipelagos. Some southwestern island chains were believed to be remnants of the Grey Mountains of Harad , destroyed during ancient cataclysm. Inland features included tropical floodplains, volcanic formations, and wide grasslands. The tropical and equatorial climate supported diverse Olvar and Kelvar. Large fauna included Great Apes and Mûmakil utilized by local warrior-classes, particularly the Mûmakani or Mahûd forces serving the Nazgûl "Dawndeath" and Sauron's great Southern Army.

The People[]

Southern Orc populations, designated "Bêsh" and "Rûki", displayed varied characteristics. Savanna orcs had some carnine features resemblence hyenas, while jungle variants possessed enlarged nostrils and ears. The Ûniki represented stout and square southern orcs bred as as battlefield units. Jungle-Trolls with almost reptilian characteristics like scaly skin and various Black Giant species ("Kôl-Dhurâk") inhabited inland jungles and coastal regions. The population included numerous indigenous groups collectively termed Barangils. Documented peoples and tribal groups comprised the Adena, Sedêri, Drêl, Pél, Nandran, Nandrû, Sanar, Tandi, Danak, Sharaeki, Ganim, Hiratti, Kîrani, Mûmakani, Ûsakani, Magri, Woodmen of the utter South, Tûlwany, Ahûshi, Forámin, Karenn-rembe, Kimen Kâh, Lewwâtu, Môrowâtu, Pitôkwî, and Temênemêna. Most were indigenous, though some trade settlements contained descendants of Apysan immigrants from Far Harad. Forest regions housed various jungle-dwelling peoples and the Chaialla, a pygmy population related to the Drúedain, noted for totemic practices. Blacklocks (southern dwarves) maintained settlements at Mablâd-dûm, Narad-dûm, and Naragbarûz, preserving distinct traditions.A Small halfling-related group called Nimblefingers functioned as artisans and trade intermediaries in an isolated and sheltered land.

Realms[]

The Dominions of the Seven (Thâni-Hazâd) constituted major political centers: An-Balkûmagân, Khâradûnê, Zimrathâni, Gimilthâni, Mêkêkhârad, Lôkhuzayan, and Balakhûrush. These territories were established by Black Númenóreans during the Second and early Third Ages. While ruling families maintained claims of Númenórean ancestry, prolonged isolation and intermarriage had reduced their numbers. Port cities developed mixed populations, while rural areas remained predominantly indigenous.

Tantûrak, located east of the Dominions, represented a separate realm where early Númenórean settlers had extensively intermarried with local populations. It developed as a center of strife and sorcery, influenced by superstition, incestuous and decrepit bloodlines and fear of death. Due to its mixed ancestry, Tantûrak was not included among the Seven Dominions.

Mûlambûr, an island settled by escaped slaves primarily from Mûmakani or Mahûd masters, established a self-ruled society of proud equals considering themselves the only true "free men" in the South Land. Amazôn, an isolated northeastern island, was inhabited by women of Black Númenórean and local descent who believed the Nameless had cursed them to bear only female children due to their refusal to serve him. Mainland men served reproductive functions but did not remain permanently. The Blue Wizard Agrithu reportedly visited the island, where modified versions of his teachings persisted.

Faiths and Dominion[]

Religious systems in the Utter South combined multiple traditions. Original beliefs centered on local spirits, land-gods, and ancestral forces, alongside surviving demonologies from the First Temple. Later influences included teachings from Sauron, early Númenóreans, and substantially from the Ithryn Luin — the Blue Wizards Morinehtar and Rómestámo — whose Vala-derived theology was incorporated into native frameworks and transformed into local variants. Contemporary cults drew from these combined legacies. Divine pantheons included numerous figures from mixed traditions.

Idols and Spirits[]

Documented Deities and spirits comprised: Askûru-Hûdari, Âlav, Kûtamayî, Ârdi, Amâv, Mûmathûmûr, Mûdhala, Kadû-baka, Lakabah, Akâva, Makûma, Hôrûr, Roh'lô, Nâmur, Audây, Dân-kalû, the Winged Serpent, Horned Serpent, Sea Serpent, Nãlamgîe, Hâthor, Ânorel, Alkar, Arkar, Malkôra, Ráskara, Mûbadahr, Rôthinzîr, Khala, Za'uira, Hiradwa, Ahsûli, Mahel, Gimilnîtir, Amân, Tredeinos, Gilthrang, Azrabêl, Agrithu, Linéris, Azain, Azrugrôth, Ûrîbêth, Xarbanisan, Alûva, Yeshûkhí, Sâth, and Zigurûn. These entities governed nature, war, fertility, death, prophecy, and other domains, with worship varying by region and ethnicity.

Cults and Orders[]

Recorded cultic institutions included the Cult of the All-Seeing Eye, Cult of the Dark Overlord, Darim Tesarath, Disciples of the Mûmathûmûr, Eyes of Malezar, Hands of Ânorel, Kâthasâphta, Monastics of Ereg-Eiren and Môr-Tarain, Servants of the Real Fire, Tyar Religion, Warders of the Night, Necromantic Priests, Mulkheril, Those with the Black Hand, Order of Hôrús, the Guild of Elements, and the Society of Derei. These orders varied in doctrine and function, ranging from martial and theocratic to esoteric and animistic practices.

The Court of Irdôri, composed of fallen Elves, represented a high melkorite order worshiping Morgoth as an enemy of Sun and Moon and restorer of the ancient starlighted Long Night using disguise, misbelief and mortal fear to manipulate even mannish rulers. Local populations maintained shrines to ancestral figures and regional deities. Worship of Morgoth and Sauron continued merged with local belief. Symbols including the Eye, the Flame, and the Black Hand appeared in iconography and magical inscriptions at cultic sites.

Notes[]

Tolkien mostly used the term Uttermost South, sometimes Far South rarely also Deepest South or Utmost South but often to also refer to southern Aman, especially Arvalin, and the Southern Cold. Sunlands was used by Samwise Gamgee to refer to the homeland of the mythical Oliphaunts.

The MERP continental map drawn by Pete Fenlon for Iron Crown Enterprises does contradict J. R. R. Tolkien's few sketches of Southern Middle-Earth. Even if he may had modified or changed his drawings to evade too close resemblence to actual Africa, as Aragorn stated the stars were strange on the southern hemisphere, his continent still would have roughly matched it in size, in contrast to the MERP version which barely would even reach the equatorial regions.
