Urreik

Urreik Galaibiasunu (Rh. "Out-ruler the Follower's son") was a man who lived in the town of Strayhold in eastern Rhovanion in ca. T.A.1636.He was a little man, serving as the Scribe of the Guild of Strays. Mild but adept at foreseeing the whims of the low-guild's lord, he had attended to all of the strays' business for many years. Gaman the Fair made broad decrees and left Urreik to implement them. Urreik Galaibia spent his nights secluded in a small chamber. It held a bed of plain wood, a wash stand with a porcelain bowl, a wardrobe, and a small chest. A mirror, razor, bar of soap, and a pitcher of water occupied the washstand. In the wardrobe hung several robes, tunics, and boots, and shoes lay along its floor. The chest was locked with a medium lock, and trapped with a poisoned needle (Hendësangwa). The trap was hard to spot and very hard to disarm. Several items occupied the chest: a bag of thirty silverpennies, a letter, a Short sword, and a tiny phial of black glass. The letter was written in the Black Speech of Mordor and, if translated, would show that Urreik was actually a spy for the Dark Lord, in contact with the Sorcerer Lâierdinôth. The phial held a "lofty bridge" spell which could take whoever broke it to Dol Guldur.Occasionally Urreik would meet with some of the leading guild members (or even outsiders) to discuss policy and revenue. In a Chamber of Records the clerk kept the scanty records of the guild and received those who had business with him. The chamber held a bookshelf with a few leather-bound volumes on it, a large desk with a chair, three armchairs, and a glass fronted case. The books were Urreik's ledgers for the present year. The Last year's had already been discarded. Gaman was not a stickler for records. On the desk there was always a clutter of papers, ink bottles and pens, and the remains of the clerk's last meal. The papers simply covered the Guild's most recent business and were be of little use to anyone besides Urreik, as he used his own code-like shorthand to keep the books.
