Umb Estelwain

"the Vale of New Hope" is Sindarin, the first element umb 'vale'

Umb Estelwain was a mountain vale immediately north of the Pinnath Gelin. The vale is one of the regions set aside by royal decree for the wintering of the sheep of the Mesta. Here the shepherds of Pinnath Gelin tended their flocks during the winter months, sheltered by the surrounding hills and watered by one of the principal sources of the Lyghiril. The use of Umb Estelwain for sheep-herding dated back to the earliest Númenórean settlement of the region, a colonization which brought with it several choice sheep from Hyarrostar on Númenor.
