Umanyar

Umanyar

The Umanyar (Q."Those who were not from Aman", also: Úmaneldi) were those Elves of the Great Journey who never reached the Undying Lands. They remained in Middle-earth, forming various distinct tribes and civilizations outside the light of the Two Trees. Among them were the Sindar, the Nandor, and other groups who, for various reasons, lingered in Middle-earth or turned aside before reaching Valinor.

The Umanyar were distinct from the Avari, the "Unwilling" (those Elves who refused the Journey entirely). While the Avari never began the march westward, the Umanyar set out but did not complete it. As a result, they remained bound to the twilight of Middle-earth, unlike the Calaquendi, the High Elves of Aman, who beheld the light of the Two Trees.
