South Downs
(S. Tyrn Harn)

Southdowns

The South Downs (MERP)
Type
Hills (Downs)
Region

A series of steep rises in northern Cardolan, the South Downs (S. Tyrn Harn) were located east of the Barrow-downs (of which they were actually a part of the same geological feature), but separated from them by the gap of Andrath through which the Greenway passed. This, and the lack of the oppressive feeling of death ever-present in the Barrow-downs, caused the locals to refer to the South Downs as an entirely different terrain feature. The choice of the word "South" no doubt refers to them in opposition to the North Downs.

The South Downs were covered with a thick, low grass, and many sheep grazed upon the sunny slopes. They once supported a much larger population, but many residents fled to Tharbad after the Plague.

Notes[]

  • Original form of name in MERP: Tyrn Hyarmen → Tyrn Harn: Tyrn Hyarmen is an unacceptable polyglot of Quenya and Sindarin; therefore we have changed that name to an equivalent all-Sindarin form (which is not given in The Lord of the Rings).
