The Two Trees of Valinor, called Telperion and Laurelin, were the greatest wonders of the Blessed Realm, sources of divine light that bathed Valinor in silver and gold light before the making of the Sun and Moon. Planted on the green mound Ezellohar by Yavanna, and watered by the sorrowful tears of Nienna, these Trees became the greatest source of light in Arda after the destruction of the ancient Two Lamps. Their blossoms glowed with a brilliance unlike any before them, and the shimmering dews that collected upon their boughs were gathered and kept as a reservoir of life-giving light. It was through the Trees that the Count of Time began, marking the great era of life and splendor for the world, known as Years of the Trees.
Lore[]
In the northeast part of Aman, at the middle of Valinor's center, Yavanna blessed a green mound. From the mound sprang the roots of Two Trees watered by the tears of Nienna. They rose, stirred by Yavanna's song; and light came out of their blossom, bathing the World once again in warm illumination. Their glowing dew-mists collected in wells below their roots, there to remain as a repository of life-giving light. This marked the beginning of the Count of Time. The older of the Two Trees, Telperion, shone silver, like the color of the underside of its deep green leaves. Laurelin, its counterpart, had spring- green leaves with gilded edges and gave off a golden radiance. Together they lit Arda, just as the Lamps had before them. Once again, the life of the World waxed, and Eru's vision continued to unfold.
The White Trees[]
Throughout the ages, Telperion bore many offshoots. These White Trees—descended from its seed or modeled in its image—retained a measure of Telperion’s silver beauty:
- Galathilion, the White Tree of Tirion in Aman
- Celeborn, the White Tree of Tol Eressëa
- Nimloth, the White Tree of Númenor
- The successive White Trees planted in Minas Ithil, Minas Anor, and later Minas Tirith, each symbolizing hope, heritage, and the alliance between the Eldar and the Dúnedain.
