Near the mouths of the Gilrain, Toldil was a familiar sight to navigators along the Bay of Belfalas off a point of the eastern cliffs of Belfalas, adjacent to the outflow of the Glinduin-Serni estuary. Shoals off the small islet's shores made the area a hazard for mariners, and a beacon-tower warned ships away. Unlike the unapproachable neighboring coastline, Toldil was bereft of cliffs and had many safe landing places (though its southern and western approaches were full of shifting shoals). With the exception of two grassy hills, Toldil was barren of life.
