A year after Dagor Bragollach, Fingolfin rode in vain to assured death. Having lost most of the providences that were held by the Noldor and their allies, Fingolfin in a last ditch of rage and desperation, rode to Angband on Rochallor to challenge Morgoth himself in single combat.
Morgoth feared death, and only fought because all of his generals were present.
Morgoth was wounded seven times and lost his foot but presumably he eventually made a replacement for his foot as it was stated in the War of Wrath that he was thrown off of his feet--though he walked with a limp ever after Fingolfin's challenge.
Thorondor eventually came to retreive the fallen elf after Morgoth had killed him and he clawed at Morgoth's face before bringing Fingolfin's body back for burial.
