Thaine (T.A. 2951 - T.A. 2980) was a Rohir woman who was born in Gondor and later moved to live in Rohan. She was the third daughter of Thengel and Morwen of Lossarnach, making her the younger sister of Meril of Cair Andros and Théoden Ednew, and elder sister of Sewara and Théodwyn. Leaving the city at the age of three, she was of an inadequate age to remember her time living in Gondor, but would always remember the tales that her parents told her. She grew up to become one of the most bravest shieldmaidens and was slain with her sister Sewara during a battle between the Rohirrim and the Dunlendings while defending their mortally wounded father.
Notes[]
- original form in TOR:Thaena = Thaine
- þæna could be an actual anglo-saxon form but would translate as "moistening", a rather odd name. Most likely the authors intended a female form of "þegen" which Tolkien modernized into "Thain", "Thaine" could be a possible reconstructed female form of this.
- Other (fanfic) sources give the names of Théodens three other sisters as Theodburh, Theodhild, and Theodgifu or "Swanhild", "Sexburg" and "Noniel".
