SouthlNds

Tarma-Pal (Hal. "Southlands") had been a realm of the First and early second ages which encompassed lands from northern Khaon or what would be later known as Lithlad , Núrn, Udûn towards parts of central Gondor and the northern bulwarks of Lugh-gobha and Ishmalog.

It had been under rule of a dynasty of Men of Darkness, a clan who had sworn blood-fealty to Morgoth. While the ruling family was distantly related to the ancestors of house Hador, the realm itself encompassed a coalition of various tribes, mostly Halethian folk, ancestors of the Daen Coentis, Sakalai and Donaen but also tribesmen of the house of Sulam and the Altin Emungi, while the ancestors of the Gwathuirim and parts of the Branomaboi had been pushed out of the White Mountains northern vales and into Eriador.

During the late First Age the Tarma-Pal had been at war with the wild elves and men of Eriador and western Rhovanion, who had been rallied by Galadriel and Celeborn after their escape from Beleriand to build a second opposition against Morgoth's expanding influence.

The realm of Tarma-Pal survived the fall of the westernmost lands, but eventually perished due to both inner strife and the advance of Galadriel's and Celeborn's alliance and its ruling dynasty died out in about the year 500 S.A. The eastern alliance afterwards occupied the Southlanders territory and left a small force of rangers to keep the former men of darkness under supervision, which the indigenous people loathed and thought of as harassment.

During the midst of the second century a new power began to rise and the folk of Agar and Udul and their kinsmen spoke of the "Great King" or "the North King" while the Númenóreans spoke of "the Dark Kings".

According to the Parma Túrëcormaron, it was Annatar who had assumed the identity of the Great King, ruling as an entity known as "Halbrand", at first thought of as a mortal king supported and even set on the throne by the Númenóreans who had taken control of most of the coastal areas of the Southlands after the eruption of the Orodruin and the great exodus of men from later Mordor towards the númenórean colonies in the west.

The folk of Tarma-Pal were, apart from the shadowy influence of the Great king, amongst themselves quite disunited and suffered from disease as well as inner strife among rival chieftains and petty-kings as well continuous attacks from the fierce eastern nomads they dubbed the "Fell Folk of the East", who would later establish themselves as Númenórean auxiliaries. During the Eriadorian Wars Between the elves and Sauron, the Dark Lord's main military force was drawn from the Southlands and it's defeat severely endangered Tarma-pals and the great king's position. With the growing influence of the Faithful, the colonies of Edhellond and Pelargir finally were able to break the dominion of the great king and free the southlanders, whose rivalling dark kings were forced to swear allegiance to the house of Elendil the Tall, among them the future King of the Dead and the Oathbreakers of the White Mountains.
