Targe is an old term for a shield. In the closer sense targe might either refer to a medium sized rectangular or oval shield type with a central grip or a small-sized roundshield type, similar to a larger buckler. Targe could also be applied to late rectangular-shaped tournament or jousting shields.
Targes were used by the Edain of Hithlum and the elves of Doriath who used a specific lozenge-formed type they called "Trum".
