A Númenórean and husband of the Ruling Queen Tar-Vanimelde, Herucalmo virtually governed Númenór during his wife's reign (S.A. 2526-2637). After her death, he usurped the throne from his young son Alcarin and ruled as Tar-Anducal from S.A. 2637-2657. Most chroniclers refused to recognize him as Westernesse's seventeenth King.

History[]

Herucalmo was born in S.A. 2286 as a descendant of Tar-Atanamir the Great, one of Númenor's most renowned but controversial kings. Although not directly in line for the throne, Herucalmo possessed significant influence through his marriage to Tar-Vanimeldë, the third Ruling Queen of Númenor, who reigned from S.A. 2526 to S.A. 2637. Tar-Vanimeldë was a talented musician and dancer, but she showed little interest in governing, delegating much of the administration of Númenor to her husband during her reign. The royal couple resided primarily in Armenelos, the Númenórean capital, though Herucalmo maintained estates in other parts of the island.

Usurpation of the Throne[]

When Tar-Vanimeldë died in S.A. 2637, the rightful heir to the throne was their son, Tar-Alcarin, born in S.A. 2406. However, Herucalmo seized the throne for himself, adopting the royal title Tar-Anducal, which means "Light of the West" in Quenya. His usurpation marked a rare and significant breach in Númenor's line of succession.

Herucalmo ruled Númenor as Tar-Anducal for twenty years, from S.A. 2637 to S.A. 2657. His rule was marked by stability but overshadowed by its illegitimacy. During this period, Númenor remained a powerful and influential island kingdom, but the legality of his reign was a subject of quiet dispute among the Faithful, a faction loyal to the traditional Númenórean customs and Valar-guided leadership.

Death and Legacy[]

Tar-Anducal died in S.A. 2657, at which point the throne passed to the rightful heir, Tar-Alcarin, without further conflict. The official royal annals of Númenor, however, did not recognize Herucalmo as a legitimate ruler, and he was excluded from the canonical Line of Kings. Instead, the records list Tar-Vanimeldë’s reign as continuing uninterrupted until Tar-Alcarin’s accession.
