A steward (W."hall-warden" or "throne-guardian") in the lands of Arda was an entrusted chamberlain or overseer originally charged with managing a ruler’s wealth, estates, provisions, and personnel. He acted as the sovereign’s representative, maintaining order and continuity during the king’s or lord’s absence. In Westron he was known simply as “Steward,” while in Quenya the royal office bore the title "Arandur", literally “king’s servant, minister” signifying its direct link to the throne. Regional equivalents reflected each culture’s speech and structure: lesser lords and princes employed a "Herundur" or "Ernildur" for provincial administration; the Rohirrim appointed a "Stigweard" (Éo.“hallwarden”) to manage Meduseld or other castles ; in Sauron's dominion’s stewards were called "Hayâtrog" (Or.“watcher of the hall”) or "Rugundul" (B.S.“hall guardian”) which could designate a governor or satrap of a city or sub-province or a temple-warden and could be analogous to the rank of a "Mautor" (B.S."lieutenant").

The Royal Stewards of Gondor[]

The Term Steward was used for the Warden of the Throne, first the royal Majordomus, later the highest official of a Kingdom and the King's representative and vice-regent.

The Stewards of Gondor were the chief councilor to the royal Line of Anárion Elendilion in Gondor. Mardil Voronwë was the first of the Ruling Stewards, since he held office when King Eärnur of Gondor rode away to war and never returned.
