Silent Watchers at Cirith Ungol
The Silent Watchers (BS. "Rogtar-Hoshat") were two hideous living statues that guarded the Tower of Cirith Ungol (during Sauron's occupation). The looked like huge, bipedal figures on thrones, each with three conjoined bodies and three vulture-like heads, so that the Watchers could simultaneously face outward, forward and across the gateway that they guarded. Besides having exceptionally keen and long sight, even in the thick darkness of a Mordor night, they had a sense of Presence that operated continously in a 500 yard radius outward from the tower. The Watchers had a powerful, malicious will that acted as a Warding spell all who would pass them had to make test their will against them. Failure resulted in the victim fleeing in fear. Even those that resisted the spell and entered the tower continued to feel Sauron's evil will, for the Watchers remained aware of their presence. However, Holy Words (such as the name of Elbereth) or Holy Light (e.g., that of the Phial of Galadriel) affected their will.
