Heren Ondotirion

Seer

A Seer and a Palantíri (MERP)

Type
Culture

The Heren Ondotirion[1] (Q. "Order [of] Stone-watchers") were the official Royal Astrologers/Astronomers and Stone-seers of Arnor (and later Arthedain). They (in addition to the King and his heir-apparent) were permitted and trained in the use of the Palantíri, and were charged with monitoring, reporting, and interpreting them. The Ondotiri (Q. "Stone-watchers") were seven in number (as were the Palantíri), plus 14 acolytes. Though they served the King and were supported by the Crown, they governed their own order internally and independently, electing a Chief Seer and appointing new members and acolytes as necessary.

History[]

The Ondotiri probably had some precedent in Númenor, since the Lords of Andúnië clearly possessed the Palantíri for some time prior to the Downfall; but if so, no records have survived. In any case, the seven Palantíri were distributed early among the Realms-in-Exile, and the Order seems to have been firmly established before the end of the Second Age, and continued in much the same form throughout the Third Age until the fall of Arthedain in T.A. 1974.

Of the three Stones allotted to the North-kingdom, the Stone of Elostirion was outside the purview of the Dúnedain. The other two Stones were originally located at Annúminas and Amon Sûl. Prior to the abandonment of Annúminas (for the new capital Fornost Erain) early in the Third Age, the Ondotiri operated primarily at the Tower of Amon Sûl, where was the larger Stone, with the Stone of Annúminas/Fornost being monitored by the King himself; until the Stone at Amon Sûl was removed prior to the Tower's destruction in the war of T.A. 1409. Thereafter both Stones were (conveniently) kept at Fornost, where they were even more closely guarded, and ceaselessly scrutinized by the Ondotiri.

Notable Ondotiri[]

  • Malborn, the tainted Seer (ca. T.A. 1400)
  • Malbeth (ca. T.A. 1891-1975)
