The Scara-hai were a faction of orcs in service to Gaurhir, an immortal demonic werewolf and servant of Sauron during the First and Second Ages. Gaurhir occupied the tower of Durthang, a citadel originally built by Gondor in the Third Age. With the aid of the Guldraugir gem, Gaurhir controlled a monstrous creation known as the Angdraug, a wolf-like creature made of stone and metal. The Scara-hai, led by Gaurhir, were instrumental in Gaurhir's plan to attack Gondor's tower and walled city. They were joined by other orc tribes, and the Angdraug became a unifying force for this alliance. Gaurhir used the gem to communicate with and command the Angdraug, allowing him to see, hear, and control its actions. The Scara-hai were not only skilled warriors but were also influenced by enchantment magic, with a half-orc among them trained by Gaurhir himself. The ultimate goal of the Scara-hai, under Gaurhir's leadership, was to carry out Sauron's schemes and spread chaos and destruction. Stopping the Scara-hai and thwarting Gaurhir's plans became a vital objective for those opposing the forces of evil.
