Sapphires (Q. "lúlë") are gem varieties of Corundum, a common mineral in some metamorphic rocks, such as crystalline limestone and gneiss. However, the finer grade gems are rare.In middle-earth Blue (Blue to violet-blue),Green (green to olive green), Yellow (orange, yellow to golden), Orange (red-orange), Purple (bright purple), Star (any color) and Black Star (Black) sapphires were known. The Noldor knew Blue Sapphires as Nind or Ninn, a term they also applied to Bluestone and turquoise.The finest sapphires were found in Bulchyades, Dûshera and Greater Harad.Sapphires were used to aid and protect from magic and were counted as stones sacred to Manwe.
