Saermân (S."bitter homeless spirit") was a maia spirit who once served his master Aulë alongside his cousin Mairon.When Mairon left Aule to serve Morgoth instead Saermân at first stayed faithful but later also became corrupted when studying Mairon's ways, becoming a powerful alchemist and scheemer who at first stayed among the folk of Aman as a spy but later was revealed and exiled and eventually also went to serve at Angband where he established himself as a talented architect, scholar and creator of orcs.

In the Angband roguelikes this Character is intended to be Saruman the white, however in the first Age Saruman was still Curumo, a loyal servant of Aule who only far later, in the third Age went to Middle-earth as one of the five Wizards.
