Following the murder of Thror of Erebor by Azog the Hobgoblin, his son Thrain II became King of Durin’s Folk. In his anger and grief, he summoned diplomatically legions and legions of Dwarvish soldiers to take vengeance on the Orcs of the Misty Mountains for the evil atrocities done unto all. Thror's slaying united all the Seven Tribes of the Dwarves to rally behind Thrain II. Thrain moved his host north, to Gundalok, where they declared formal war on the Orcs, and invaded the sacred mountain Gundabad, which Azog’s folk had claimed years prior as their capital. And so Mount Gundabad was totally purged, for the pent-up fury of the Dwarves was unmatched, and from the lowest mine to the highest watchtower, they slew Goblins and Hobgoblins and rescued every man, woman, and child they had in their captivity, and brought them to safety. Azog himself fled south, prompting the Dwarves to continue to press after him through the mountains towards their then-infested ancient realm, Moria.
