a round-shield of Rohan
Round Shields were used in Middle-Earth since the Elder Days. The Noldorian and Sindarian Warriors of Gondolin wore great Roundshields in addition to tear- almond and lozenge shaped shield types. In the Third Age the Rohirrim used smaller roundshields for their cavalry. In contrast to the mannish types, which were either large, heavy and primitive metal shields or lighter shields of wood or wicker with iron in their frames and metallic handle and boss, the elven shields were either light shields made of several layers of wood, covered with a thin but solid layer of metal or were entirely made out of lighter metal alloys, making them far superior to the primitive and heavy types worn by Orcs and men and perhaps equal to the Dwarven Shield types.
