Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them,
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
The Rings of Power (Q."Ciryat Lóti"; Ad. "Khamîl Aranî"; S."Ivír Rodyn"; Bel."Mirzân Ra’shur") are mighty magical talismans created by the Elves of the Gwaith-i-Mirdain and Sauron in the Second Age.
The Great Rings[]
The Twenty Great Rings were the most powerful of all the Rings of Power, forged during the Second Age by the Elves of Eregion and Celebrimbor himself under the guidance of the Dark Lord Sauron, who at the time appeared in a fair guise as Annatar, "Lord of Gifts." These rings were crafted with the intent of enhancing the abilities of their wearers, granting them immense power, longevity, and influence. However, Sauron's secret creation of the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom corrupted their purpose, binding the rings to his will. The Great Rings were divided into three categories: the Three Rings of the Elves, forged by Celebrimbor without Sauron’s direct involvement; the Seven Rings of the Dwarves, distributed to the Dwarven lords; and the Nine Rings of Men, which ensnared their bearers and turned them into the Ringwraiths. The One Ring itself, the master of them all, remained the cornerstone of Sauron’s domination, granting him control over the others when they were worn
The Rings of the Elves (The Three)[]
Crafted in secret by Celebrimbor, last of the House of Fëanor, uncorrupted by Sauron’s touch, they symbolized wisdom, protection, and preservation. Wielded by great Elven leaders, the Three remained hidden, their power used to sustain the beauty of the Elven realms and resist the decay of time.
- Narya - Worn by Cirdan (later Gandalf)
- Nenya - worn by Galadriel
- Vilya - worn by Gil-Galad (later Elrond)
The Rings of the Dwarves (The Seven)[]
To the Dwarves, the Seven were given, bright treasures for their mighty kings. These rings kindled a hunger for gold and riches in their bearers, driving them to amass great hoards that glittered in the deep halls of stone. Yet the stubborn hearts of Dwarves proved resilient; they could not be bent to Sauron’s will, though ruin still followed them. Dragons came for their treasures, kingdoms fell to flame, and the Seven Rings, one by one, were lost to fire or seized by the Dark Lord.

The Rings of Men (The Nine)[]
To Mortal Men, Sauron gave Nine Rings of Power, the Chains of Kings (Shagarî Tûrûm) like Haradrim named them, and in their acceptance, they sealed their doom. These Rings offered great might, wealth beyond imagining, and lives prolonged far beyond the span of mortal years. But the gifts were poisoned, for the Rings bound their bearers to the will of the Dark Lord. Over centuries, their bodies faded, and they became the Nazgûl, the Ringwraiths, shadows of their former selves, enslaved to the power of the One Ring.

The Lesser Rings[]
Not all rings of power were part of the fateful Twenty. In the early days of their craft, the Elves forged many lesser rings, testing their skills and experimenting with the magical properties they could imbue. These rings lacked the intricate power and purpose of the Great Rings but still contained enchantments of considerable potency.. Though they were not crafted with ill intent, Sauron learned much from observing their creation, enabling him to guide the forging of the more powerful rings toward his own dark designs. Some of these lesser rings remained scattered across Middle-earth, their enchantments minor yet alluring, coveted by those who sought a glimpse of their ancient magic. Some of them are known:

Other Rings[]
Middle-earth was home to other rings of power that predated or existed beyond the craft of Eregion. In the Elder Days, Melkor himself was said to have wielded artifacts of immense sorcery, though their nature was often dark and destructive. Dwarven lore tells of ancient rings crafted by their own smiths, imbued with resilience and strength, though these were not aligned with the designs of the Elves or Sauron. Additionally, in the shadowy corners of Middle-earth, sorcerers and lesser wizards sometimes crafted rings with their own crude magics. These artifacts, while far less refined, added to the mystique and danger surrounding rings of power, making them symbols of ambition and peril throughout the ages.

Rings Poem[]
- In ages past, the smiths took flame,
- Great works of craft their hands did frame.
- With guile, Annatar shared their art,
- To bind the free with a treacherous heart.
- Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
- Crafted in secret by Celebrimbor’s hand,
- Untouched by Sauron’s deceitful eye,
- They hold the grace of starlight, fair and grand.
- Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
- Carved for the miners, proud and unbowed,
- They delved too deep where greed had grown,
- Till treasures became their burden and shroud.
- Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
- With crowns of power, they rose and fell,
- Ensnared by lies, beneath Sauron’s eye,
- Their souls now wander, bound to his spell.
- One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
- In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie,
- Forged in Mount Doom where his malice is sown,
- The Ring of Power to rule and defy.
- One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
- One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them,
- Its whispers corrupt, its weight profound,
- The will of Sauron within its bound.
- In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie,
- The Ring’s dark path is written in flame,
- A destiny bound to rise and die,
- For hope shall come, though shadow claim.
