EnrunedShield

an enruned oval shield

Oval Shields were used throughout various decades in Middle-Earth. The most famous were those of dwarven design and their imitations deployed by the Northmen. While Dwarven Shields were covered with a thin but light and solid metal coating, those of mannish design usually consisted of several sheets of wood glued together and covered with canvas and leather. Most often these designs had a round or spindle shaped metal boss. These Shields could have a weight up to 22 lbs.

Notes[]

Oval Shields are almost never detailed in J.R.R. Tolkien's Legendarium, while mannish Round shields and Almond or tear-shaped Elven Shield are mentioned on several occasions. However Oval Shields are shown as items in Smaugs hoard in one of Tolkien's Illustrations, indicating dwarven and Northron origin of these type of personal armor.
