Osthir

Osthir (1382-1409) was the grown son of Minaglar and the last Prince of Cardolan during Angmar’s invasion. He was slain in the Fall of Cardolan by Rogrog the Troll, and his body was buried at the Barrow-Downs along with his wife Ivriluin and his sister Celarien. Osthir’s daughter Nirnadel was able to escape, but never rose to the throne and died many decades later. With her, the royal noble line of Cardolan ended and competing feudal lords of middle man descent took over the rule, notably avoiding the title of King.

Notes[]

Original form in MERP: Ostoher.

After the Division of Arnor into three Kingdoms, the Kings of Arthedain chose to take official names in Sindarin instead of Quenya, so it seems very unlikely that a King of Cardolan would have officially used a Quenya name, as this would indicate claim for the High-Kingdom of Arnor of Old. It seems more likely that he would have used Sindarin name like his peers, so here the name Ostoher is replaced with a Sindarin cognate.

MERP also erroniously considers him a king while his, unnamed, pendant in the book is explicitly called a "Prince".
