Oropher was a Sinda elf who was born during the First age and was related to the royal house of Thingol.  He was the lord of the Sindar and so-called Silvan elves of Northern Mirkwood until the end of the second age.  He was father to Thranduil and grandfather to Legolas.  He died at the end of the second age during the War of the Last Alliance along side Gil-Galad.

Notes

In the books Oropher's descendence remains obscure, only vague allusions to Legolas II Greenleaf and Celeborn the Wise possibly being akin and his name belonging to a family of "Tree-names" among the Sindar have led to presume him to be a possible descendant of Elmo.MERP however explained Legolas' kinship to Celeborn through his mother, Arhendhiril.
