Ohtar was a Dúnadan of Arnor and the esquire of Isildur. One of three survivors of the Battle of Gladden Fields in T.A. 2, he brought the shards of Narsil to Arnor.
Ohtar was not his personal name but only an appellation. "Ohtar" referred to any fully-trained Númenórean warrior who had not been yet appointed to the rank of Roquen. Though no undisputed old records gave his true name , some secondary sources report his official name as "Aranel" or "Aurin son of Belsazar" (N).
