In the First Age, a small group of Sindar Elves from Beleriand anchored their ships in Blue Wedge Bay. They explored the future lands of Mag and Tûmag, and eventually settled in the Cave Hills, the (Ma.) Nols Aulda (which they called (S.) Emyn Felig: "Hills [of] Caves"). They enjoyed the quiet and beauty of their home, and found peace by becoming intertwined with the land. After many years, the Elves grew tired of this life and sailed to the Undying Lands.

The Elves had been attracted to the Nols Aulda first for their beauty, second for their comfort. The hills were riddled with caves, from which the Elves carved homes. The limestone caverns were hollowed by water running through the stone, as were the caves in the Snakehills to the west. Stalactites and stalagmites were numerous and filled every cave. Deep pools of pure water could be found in many of the tunnels, their surface tension being broken only by the slow dripping of water from above.

On the outside, the hills were covered with vegetation, except on the higher peaks, which were often 600' high. No large expanses of forest covered the Nols Aulda, but many small groves grew in the valleys between them.

Notes[]

  • Original name in MERP Fan Modules: (S.) Emyn Feleg = (PQ.) Ambõī Phelegī = (Av.) Imbô(e) Pilac = (Ma.) Nols Aulda. However Sindarin was not spoken in this place and time; therefore we have rendered it into corresponding Proto-Quenya form, and propose equivalent Avarin and Magrin forms.
