Narsil (Q. "Red and White Flame") was the sword of Elendil the Tall, so named "…for it shone with the light of the sun and of the moon."

Originally forged by Telchar of Nogrod at some time in the late First Age, it eventually came into the possession of Elendil, presumably as an heirloom of the Lords of Andúnië of Númenor. Elendil wielded it throughout the War of the Last Alliance, until it was finally broken during Elendil's fatal combat with Sauron on the slopes of Orodruin, and its light was extinguished. However, the several pieces, known as the "Shards of Narsil", were conserved by Elendil's son Isildur, who used a shard to cut the One Ring from Sauron's finger.

The Shards of Narsil survived the demise of Isildur at the Disaster of the Gladden Fields (where Isildur specifically discharged one Ohtar with carrying the Shards from the fray), after which it became an heirloom of the Kings of Arnor and Arthedain, ultimately coming into the custody of Elrond and the Chieftains of the Dúnedain. The sword was finally re-forged by the Elven-smiths of Rivendell, and given to Aragorn, who renamed it Andúril (Q. "Flame of the West"), and wielded it throughout the War of the Ring.

Aragorn also referred to Andúril as the "Sword That Was Broken" or "The Sword Reforged". It presumably became an heirloom of House Telcontari, the heirs of Aragorn.
