World-eaters (Q."Ambarmatyar") or Earth-eaters (S."Amarmedionath") was a general term referring to the ancient evil gnawing on the roots of Ambar. These demons were thought to be fallen Maiar or Spirits of Arda, embodying the decline of the world. They may have also been just shapes and phantoms without a will of their own, animated manifestations of Morgoth's Essence.
