This great white spirit in the shape of a horse could sense Evil from leagues off. Nahar 's (Va. "næχærra") hooves were of a silver harder than any steel and struck at evil foes like the hammers of Aulë. Although he could speak, he rarely chose to do so. Some said that he sometimes visited mortal mares at night and left them with foal. Although this may have be mere superstition, no one argued that he was the forefather of the Mearas and the Horse of the Elves. Nahar's neigh was like the sound of a mighty trumpet, like his master Oromë's great Horn, and like the sound of that Horn, his voice inspired terror in all Evil beings and courage in those who were Good.
