The Monsters of Morgoth (Q: "Úvanimor", "Úvanor") or "monsters of horn and ivory" were various kinds of creatures created by Morgoth. They appear in several of J.R.R. Tolkien's earliest tales, including The Book of Lost Tales and The Lost Road and Other Writings.
Morgoth (apparently) spent a large part of his innate power in the breeding of such creatures (among other things) from existing stocks. The obvious culmination of his efforts resulted in Dragons, his most powerful monsters. In The Children of Hurin, it is said of Glaurung that "… he spoke by the evil spirit that was in him…" and that he was filled with the evil spirit of Morgoth, so Morgoth (again apparently) had the ability to embody or imprison spirits in incarnate forms – or to so embody some of his own innate power.
