Meril (S."Rose") , generally known in rohan as Róse, was a royal woman who once lived in the kingdom of Rohan. She was the first daughter of Morwen of Lossarnach and Thengel, and the elder sister of Théoden Ednew, Thaine, Sewara, and Théodwyn. Born in Gondor, she already showed much of her mother’s grace, and well remembered her life among the Dúnedain. Unlike her siblings, Meril enjoyed to live in Gondor. As certain lords were manoeuvring to prove their worth to Thengel, Meril hoped to give her hand to one who would love her. She married Anbar Cilgir, the Lord of Cair Andros, at a comparatively young age, and with him governed the isle for long years. With him, she bore a daughter, Idis II, and she taught her the lore of Rohan attentively, fostering a love of two homes in her spirit.
Meril and her child, leading those few civilians who dwelt still on the isle in the War of the Ring, were evacuated when an Orc-host from the Morannon besieged it, and they fled to the fastness of Anórien, where they remained to witness the coronation of King Elessar I. In peace, Meril dwelt henceforth with her husband, while her daughter, after contributing her knowledge of Rohirric history to the scholars of Minas Tirith and to Meriadoc Brandybuck, worked to foster ever greater friendship between the peoples of the Mark and Gondor.
Notes[]
- In Legendarium, the character Meril was the wife of Finrod and bore the child Gil-Galad who were both sent to dwell in the Havens of the Falas for their safety.
- Other (fanfic) sources give the names of Théodens three other sisters as Theodburh, Theodhild, and Theodgifu or "Swanhild", "Sexburg" and "Noniel".
