Menegroth (S."The Thousand Caves") was the royal seat of Thingol, King of Doriath, and his queen, Melian the Maia, during the First Age. Carved into the rock near the Esgalduin River within the forested realm of Doriath, it stood as one of the most majestic and fortified dwellings of the Elves in Beleriand. Protected by the Girdle of Melian, Menegroth served as a cultural and political center for the Sindar, surviving many of the early wars of Beleriand. However, its splendor was marred by tragedy during the Sack of Doriath, when it was destroyed by the sons of Fëanor in their relentless pursuit of the Silmarils.
