Melin was the leader of a group of Avari, the Penni, who had come to the hills west of the Sea of Rhûn in the first Age. He befriended Fala, daughter of the Great Shaker, a Volcano spirit. When during their travels Fala accidentally drowned in a Waterfall, her fire-spirit father blamed Melin and threatened his tribe which left the Hills and moved on into Rhovanion. Only Melin and his son Kedin remained in a small cave in the remote hills.
