Mardin was bodyguard Dwarf to Durin I. Those Durins that followed would also take a lead bodyguard who would have proved themselves in battle. The Dwarf would forsake his old name and take up the name Mardin in honor of those who were personal guards to the greatest of Dwarf kings.
