"Mail" properly only refers to chain armor in the close sense, however in victorian times the word was often applied to any kind of ancient body armor, also including not only plated mail but even scale, ring, plate or lamellar armor, often leading to misunderstandings and misinterpretation of historically correct chain armor and other types within the context of modern fantasy literature.

Proper mail includes the byrnie, hauberk and haubergeon.
