A pride of Highland Lynxes, mid-sized hunting cats of Middle-earth, moves together through a rocky highland pass under a cloudy sky.
Highland Lynxes (S."Rawath Nibin", Du."Dinleus") were hunting cats that lived in the less extreme foothills and mountains throughout Middle-Earth. Although smaller than the snow leopard of the mountains, they were still effective hunters and fishers. Unlike most hunting cats of this size, which were usually loners, the lynx lived in prides of 5 to 8 cats.
These cats had an intricate social structure and hunted as a group like lions. Groups of lynxes brought down large game using similar tactics to those employed by wolves. If taken young, these cats made loyal, protective pets.
While these mountain cats were mere beasts, with no care for the wars of Men and Orcs, they could still be extremely dangerous. They were able to move about nearly unseen, silently creeping towards their prey, springing upon the unwary with vicious precision.
