Luthaniel (S. "Flower-daughter") is a mysterious figure mentioned in fragments and records.
History[]
By many accounts, Luthaniel was born under the name Inzilaphel (A. "Flower-daughter"), the illegitimate child of Ar-Pharazôn and a mistress of Númenórean nobility. She had three younger full sisters. By different accounts, she had a half-brother, Pharazônthôn, whose mother was a slave-concubine from Harad; as her father had gained the throne by undermining the law of equal primogeniture, he was more likely to become King of Númenor even with "lesser" blood.
It is said that Luthaniel was committed to the cause of the Faithful, as she saw many of her friends sacrificed at the Temple of Melkor if their families stepped out of line, or were disappeared by her father. She also heard that there were plans for her to marry Sauron, a notion which utterly repulsed her.
She thus privately changed her name to a Sindarin name. The public knowledge of her conversion varies between different accounts, but in those that she approached the Faithful, they all believed her to be a spy, doubting her conversion due to her strong-willed temperament like her father. If she did exist, she likely perished in the Downfall of Númenor, but the most dubious accounts speak of her sailing to Luthany and becoming its first Queen.
