Long Tom (Or."Tûma") was a big and burly Half-orc from Isengard.

One of Saruman's chief servants, Long Tom was sent to Breeland to work together with Doeth and his gang of rogues. An imposing man, he acted as the squint-eyed southerner's enforcer, carrying out his chief's tasks and overseeing the labour of fellow ill-favoured men.

Doeth soon sent Long Tom and Oldenad as his eyes and ears in the Shire. While the Dunlending traded for goods with the local Hobbits, the Half-orc bribed them or bullied them into handing over vital information on persons and places of note, such as the fugitive Frodo Baggins.

Both Long Tom and Oldenad were recalled to Bree to help in the hunt for Baggins, possessing something that Sharkey sought desperately. The two ruffinas stood by as the halfing and his companions entered the Prancing Pony, though they ultimately failed to capture them.

Long Tom left Bree soon after and went to the outpost at the Barrow-downs and enlisted as an ally of Lotho Sackville-Baggins, helping him impose a terror regime in the Shire. When "Sharkey" (Saruman) there, Tom was made chief of the ruffians gathered there and supported his master's schemes to revenge himself on the halflings. As second-in-command to Sharkey, he used Oldenad to collect taxes, had Bill Ferny guard the Buckland Gate and tasked Muagan Yelloweye with picking on the locals. Those who disobeyed Long Tom were sentenced to prison or the gallows, as examples for the rest.

During the Battle of Bywater, Long Tom led the brigands against the Hobbits. He viciously fought against Frodo Baggins, trying to stab him, but was instead backed against a wall, before being pinned by the blade of Sting.

Notes[]

MERP usually gives Tom as the Westron translation of the orcish name "Tûma".So possibly Long Tom´s true orcish name was Tûma while he was known as Long Tom among the Eriadorians.
