a Kine of Araw
The white Kine of Araw were an archaic race of wild Cattle native to the wide plains of Rhûn, and possibly to other locations in the Far East. Based upon their name, they may have been creatures bred by Oromë, Vala of Beasts, and may have been equivalent to the Nimrochath and other creatures descended from those bred by Araw himself. They were evidently large and heavy beasts, strong-bodied and fierce, with great horns and nigh-untamable temperament. They were the ancestors of most later kine, which the Númenóreans first domesticated as livestock and dairy-beasts, an art which was passed on to later cultures.
Notes[]
The Kine of Araw may be identified with ancient aurochs, or wild cattle, chiefly Bos primigenius primigenius. This is in line with the depiction of Middle-earth as a blend of the mythological and historical prehistoric world.
