Kaurlinnia (Rh."burden-ceaser") was a young Northman warrior from northern Rhovanion who in ca. T.A.1636 had come to the town of Strayhold.He was in particularly bad spirits on the day of this visit and as a group of travelers passed he would glare into the eyes of the most formidable looking fighter among them. Any response to this, from returning the evil look to completely ignoring it was taken as insulting or disrespectful. The warrior would step into his target's path and demanded redress for the insult. He did not take "no" for an answer and pushed for a fight. He agreed to whatever rules were set down as far as restraining killing blows and such, but would abide by none of them. He would stop only when his opponent was no longer standing. He offered to lay bets but would not willingly pay if he lost. The crowds of the city were always up for a good fight, so as soon as the altercation began they started to form a ring. Any attempts to back down did draw only jeers and cat calls from the onlookers. There was be a good deal of betting amongst the spectators with odds going to the Northman. There were no constables in the town to put an end to the fight so it continued until it came to a resolution. Any people who attempted to aid their champion in his fight were warned by those around them that such actions were not viewed highly here.It was town custom that in such a fight the loser's goods were taken by the winner but Kaurlinnia was too happy with his own gear, a broad axe and a chain shirt, too bother with anything save a purse from his foe.
