Kahmer

Kahmer lay within the jungle and served as the spiritual and political centre of the Honnin culture. The town functioned as the seat of the order and its fabric reflected the religious practice and social organisation of the Honnin. At the city's heart stood the Temple of the Bird God, where the avian deity Oku-Tori was venerated. The temple provided the locus for regular rituals, daily prayers and public festivals and thus shaped the rhythm of town´s life. Kahmer also housed the governing council of the Honnin, whose assemblies decided matters affecting the community. The council chambers performed an administrative role and served as a place of collective representation. The streets were decorated with carved reliefs, tapestries and religious emblems. Markets and thoroughfares were pervaded by the scent of exotic spices and by music and song that accompanied civic and ritual activities. The town’s history was recorded in its architecture, liturgy and customary practices. Kahmer stood as the principal expression of Honnin identity and of their communal devotion.
