Kârarog (BS."Red Demon") was a lesser Maia drawn to the service of Sauron since very early in his tyrannical reign, along with his follower Zaken. He was tall, pale, and ageless, with bright red hair and golden eyes, evoking a sense of eerier uneasiness though he often claimed to be but a solitary sorcerer from Ralian.

History[]

A fire-spirit that descended upon Arda and perhaps one of Aulë's disciples, the Maia who became Kârarog eventually felt that he had outlived his purpose among the denizens of Valinor and saw his calling lied with with the rising Sauron, becoming useful and more than capable servant.

Though not as formidable as one of the seven Balrog-lords or the Nine Nazgûl, Kârarog has shown himself to be a willing sharp tool in Sauron's arsenal, warranting a seat in his "Black Council". Though more of a dignitary than warrior, it was not uncommon for Kârarog to accompany his master as one of his cohorts at times when Sauron himself came forth to gloat in his triumph over his adversaries. However, before the end of the War of the Last Alliance Kârarog had fled into the Utter East and so survived his Lord's disastrous downfall, though he remained ardently loyal to that allegiance.

As the Shadow of Sauron began to take shape in western Middle-earth, Kârarog took the abandoned Tower of Carvarad for his own and once more wrought evil works in the name of his old master. Clothed in flesh as a gaunt wanderer, Kârarog pretends to be an autonomous entity who reveres neither the Aratar nor the Dark Powers as a mere sorcerer hailing from the eastern land of Ralian. Those unwitting folk he ensnares through guile and trickery, whether as his own means or those of the minions that issue from Carvarad, he binds to the bidding of Sauron. He also sends emissaries with instructions to the Easterling confederations, among whom many still pay homage to the Dark Lord - at least as one of their chief deities.
