The Icelands were legendary cold lands or an island beyond the northwind, discovered by Eärendil the Mariner on his voyage to the west.

It is possible that a historic precursor of historical Iceland was intended, although it may also be possible that , geographically, real-world Iceland rather would correspond to Hithlum or Dor lomin and "Iceland" just implies an icy or ice-covered region.
