The First Temple (Me. "Fhafaltor"; Hl. "Kôd-yar"), also called the Temple of the Radiant (Hl. "Kûda Aklâr") and later remembered among the Edain as the House of the Lord (E. "Zadan-Gundua"), was a great temple devoted to the worship of Morgoth. In the First Age it was built by many hands: early men of hildorien and, according to some accounts, even Orcs and eastern Dwarves (presumably ancestors of the Petty Dwarves) contributed to its construction. Fankil was the chief organiser of the work and there performed dark rites in honour of Morgoth. He became the high priest of the region, and many of his followers were so devoted that they followed him to war at the Battle of Palisor. The First Temple was destroyed during the First Age, whereupon the people dispersed and the race of Men suffered great loss. Whether the destruction arose from open rebellion, from some natural calamity, or from events connected with the great battle is not recorded. The exact site of the temple is likewise uncertain; it may have stood within the Murmenalda, a district later consumed by the sea and known to the Easterlings as the Bay of Nikkea. In the Sixth Age the Haradron city of Bablon was held to occupy the ancient site of the First Temple.
