King Grumni son of Thrar II, ruled Nogrod in Ered Luin during the First Age. He was mostly known for his mastery within smithing and engineering, being one of the foremost pioneers amongst the dwarven kind due to his revolutionary inventions.

History[]

Early Life[]

Grumni was born and raised to be a noble like his father before him, but he never had much interest for politics and governing despite his responsibilites as a young dwarven prince and the responsibilites he surely could not avoid in the future that awaited him upon succession.

His father Thrar urged him to take it seriously, although such lectures fell of deaf ears because the young dwarf had no aspirations to sit on the throne ruling over others. Grumni allways imagined himself to be a warrior, but it didn't take long after his training started that he was not fit to fight amongst the other soldiers. His demeanour was way too slow to keep up with the others and it was deemed necessary he quit partaking his training due to the importance of him staying alive to secure the future of the kingdom.

Joining the Stormforge Guild[]

Grumni found himself walking through the forges during an inspection with the steward of the council, overlooking stock of materials and equipment to make sure the smiths could deliver on time. Rumor has it there was goblin raids ongoing at the outskirts of the kingdom amongst the dwarven hill tribes whom were mostly unguarded. It was upto King Thrar and the council to supply the hill dwarves with armor and weapons.

Grumni learned a great deal from the steward during these months, about management and so forth. What really interested him was the smiths and their craftsmanship, he often stayed learning from these masters of the craft and not before long he joined as one of them at the Stormforge.

He proved himself to be a natural with his keen and creative mind, seeing a solution to every problem. He was an example to the dwarves around him, thinking in ways the others had not yet considered for he understood the laws of physics better than most. Something that came in handy when, most especially when he upgraded and improved upon the fortifications of the capital.

Master Engineer of the Dunborim Council[]

It was decided a few years into his new profession that he'd join the Council of Dunborim and aid his father as Master Engineer, working on not only the capital, but fortresses and holds around the kingdom, on the ourtskirts amongst the hill tribes of the dwarves so they could better defend themselves without the aid from Nogrod itself. It was King Thrar's vision that he could entrust his vassals to become self sufficient and independent in their own right. And so many keeps were constructed in the surrounding regions of Nogrod, one of which was Namfaldir, later governed by the Stormbeard Clan.

Grumni grew a close friendship with his nephew Khargôz, son of his sister Gwenras, whom proved himself a much better leader figure than himself. Something which came as a comfort to Grumni, seeing as he could allways trust his friend's judgement and seek advise when necessary.

Ascending the Throne[]

Grumni ascended the throne when his father died of old age, it didn' take long before he had to adress matters at the Council. Something he found dreadful to deal with, so he recruited his nephew Khargôz to become his main advisor and steward. It didn't take long before Khargôz proved himself useful despite his young age, having natural instincts for leadership and ruling made him a very popular and influential dwarf in Nogrod, quickly rising to power. He was awarded with his own keep to govern, and thus he founded his own clan of the Stormbeards.

Khargôz's son would have to rule as acting Lord of Namfaldir in his father's absence as he was often needed at the capital of Nogrod, serving as advisor.

Death in Battle[]

Grumni never grew as old as he'd wish, he still had many ideas of his own making on how to employ siege weapons on the battlefield. He was luckily able to prove some of his creations useful in battle tactics before he met his demise on the battlefield. It happened during a war with a large tribe of orcs who'd come from the northern ridge of the Blue Mountains.

The battle took place in a hillside where Grumni and his army had the high ground, standing behind enemy lines was Grumni alongside his artillery. Ordering the infantry to form defensive positions while him and his regiment of ranged weaponry could rain fire down upon their enemies. It worked effectively, scattering the enemies to all directions while Grumni and his dwarves stood their ground firmly.

Everything worked as planned by the proud King as he stood there chuckling with his good friend Khargôz atop the hill, but one of the older and respected commanders grew too impatient to merely stand by watching the artillery do all the work. He was not fond of this new strategy and preferred the old ways of waging war, which lead to him charging head on with his battalion of infantry warriors.

It made the whole dwarven army scattered, breaking up the formations necessary to secure the rear of the army where Grumni and his artillery were stationed. Grumni and his men was flanked by orcs from both sides. Making it difficult to defend the position due to mostly having engineers at his side rather than warriors.

He grabbed his warhammer and battered every orc that dared close in on him for melee combat. The dwarves who stood with him was impressed and motivated, their morals heightened when they saw their King give their enemies a proper hammering, not knowing their leader as a warrior. It was a fierce dwarf King whom stood there crushing one foe after the other with a brute strength few had seen before or since. The only explanation for his immense prowess was due to his many years as a craftsman at the forges, despite turning away from the path of the warrior in his youth.

It was not enough however, Grumni was overwhelmed in spite of his lethal strikes for he was still a sluggish fighter. He rested his head on hjs friend's lap during his dying breath, choosing Khargôz to become acting ruler of Nogrod and mentor his son the young prince Dolin IV until he comes of age to rule and fully make decisions on his own.
